T-Mobile Takes Action to Prepare for Hurricane Ike

T-Mobile Wi-Fi Access Free of Charge in Select Regions to Help People Stay Connected

T-Mobile USA, Inc. is preparing for the potential impact of Hurricane Ike, anticipating landfall in central South Texas, but also preparing for impacts as far south as Brownsville and in the metro areas of Houston and San Antonio. The company is fully mobilizing all necessary resources to restore service to its customers and emergency first-responders if its cell sites are affected by the storm.

The T-Mobile Incident Command Team stands ready in Houston, and two other Command Centers are assisting in New Orleans and Mobile, Ala. to mobilize teams of T-Mobile technicians and engineers as soon as post-hurricane conditions permit. The companys Network Operation Center (NOC) in Frisco, Texas will also be responsible for managing network traffic during this event.

Additionally, T-Mobile is offering complimentary Wi-Fi Internet service making access free of charge for customers and non-customers alike. T-Mobile HotSpot Wi-Fi access will be available at participating locations beginning at 8:00 p.m. CDT tonight, September 11, throughout coastal Texas and up to 300 miles inland as well as in the New Orleans and coastal Louisiana areas.

Free Wi-Fi access will be available until noon CDT on the second day after Ike makes landfall to help people stay connected, especially for those who have evacuated their homes.

People can access complimentary T-Mobile HotSpot service during this limited time in the following locations where T-Mobile has agreements to offer HotSpot service:

  • Airports: George Bush International Airport, Houston (Lufthansa Club); and Louis Armstrong International Airport, New Orleans (Delta Club)
  • Over 170 Starbucks coffee shops in Texas and Louisiana
  • FedEx Kinkos
  • Borders Books & Music stores
  • Hyatt Hotels
  • Red Roof Inns
  • T-Mobile retail stores

T-Mobile is taking the following additional steps to prepare the companys network for the storm:

  • In the event of widespread power outages, T-Mobile has thousands of gallons of fuel accessible and ready-to-roll into the affected areas to power cell site generators and company repair/transport vehicles, and for other emergency circumstances.
  • Backup generators and fuel tanks for regional network switch operations are in place, have been tested and fuel has been topped off.
  • To further supplement the fixed and portable back-up generators, T-Mobile currently has in place at its cell sites throughout the region dozens more portable generators, ready to be transported to impacted areas.
  • Microwave radio equipment has been trucked into the region to facilitate data communication from the cell sites to T-Mobiles network switches, as backup, in the event T1 fixed line service fails.
  • T-Mobile has several Cells-On-Wheels (COWs) pre-staged in neighboring markets to move in and provide additional wireless communications capacity in the hardest-hit areas.
  • T-Mobile will monitor evacuation efforts and routes, and will take steps to increase wireless capacity in those areas as customers move inland.
  • The company also is coordinating recovery efforts with local, state and national officials.

T-Mobile Customer Tips

In order to better facilitate communication between families and loved ones, and to alleviate anticipated network congestion before, during and after any storm, T-Mobile recommends its customers follow these important tips:

  • Utilize text messaging to communicate instead of voice calls. Text messaging has a greater success rate in getting through the network during high-usage periods versus voice calls.
  • Keep your voice calls short in duration.
  • Make sure your phone is fully charged prior to the storm. Consider obtaining a vehicle charger in the event of power loss.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands. Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully ...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
