Research and Markets: How Many IOPS Is Enough?

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/wp7fq6/how_many_iops_is) has announced the addition of the "How Many IOPS Is Enough?" report to their offering.

This report gives updated results of the survey that determines the IOPS requirements for various applications. User inputs are amplified by collateral information that correlates IOPS requirements with key enterprise SSD markets.

The 80-page report dissects the results of a months-long on-line survey of IT managers which collected their inputs on the IOPS, capacity, and latency needs for a number of key enterprise applications. Through its 54 figures and eight tables the study sheds new light on the speed requirements for certain key applications.

The survey asked respondents to share a rough idea of their high-speed storage needs, expressed in capacity and performance, measured in IOPS (inputs or outputs per second) and maximum latency. Nearly two hundred respondents also shared the speed of the rest of their system and for the application type being run on that system.

In many cases there was a reasonable correlation between two of the surveyed parameters:

  • Capacity & IOPS requirements
  • Capacity & Maximum Latency
  • IOPS Requirements and Maximum Latency

A relatively large number of our respondents (68%) did not measure their system's performance. Their response (and likely their approach to solving storage related issues) was to use their best guess.

The sample group was of a respectable size, giving us a 7.1% margin of error. We continue to collect survey data with a goal of increasing the respondent base and reducing the error margin.

Storage pricing is loosely tied to performance. This relationship is likely to tighten as a result of this survey and as those who purchase fast storage become more sophisticated.

Every organization is facing their own Digital Transformation as they attempt to stay ahead of the competition, or worse, just keep up. Each new opportunity, whether embracing machine learning, IoT, or a cloud migration, seems to bring new development, deployment, and management models. The results are more diverse and federated computing models than any time in our history.

Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on...
IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addr...
