vIPtela Lures Ex-Cisco, Nicira Executives to Round Out Leadership Team

New Vice Presidents Join Stealth Startup Focused on Redefining the Wide Area Network

SAN JOSE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/08/14 -- vIPtela, Inc., a software-centric start-up working to improve the security, agility and control of corporate IP networks, today announced the appointment of Pepe Garcia as vice president of systems engineering, and James Winebrenner as vice president of sales. The appointments round out the executive staff of vIPtela as the company prepares to introduce a new architecture designed to improve the performance, security and cost of wide area networks (WANs) and WAN services.

Garcia joins vIPtela as vice president of systems engineering, bringing 20 years of experience in network design and support. Previously, he was director of product management at Nicira -- an industry-defining company in Software Defined Networks (SDNs) and network virtualization, later acquired by VMware -- where he directed and executed product and go-to-market strategies for the company's SDN platform and products. Prior to Nicira, he served as director of product line management at Juniper Networks. In this role, he led the data center and enterprise networking teams, which brought products to market that accounted for substantial increases in revenue. Before Juniper, Garcia directed strategy and development for Cisco IP-MPLS and QoS routing protocols and infrastructure components for Cisco IOS across all routing and switching product lines, and he played a key role in the design of the Catalyst 6500, and 802.11/WiMax product lines. Earlier at Hewlett Packard, he was a network architect for the company's internal and external networks, in charge of the design and implementation of Internet Data Centers, global routing, and security infrastructures.

Winebrenner joins vIPtela as vice president of sales, bringing more than 14 years of global sales management, business development and technical marketing experience in security and network infrastructures across a range of industries. Most recently he served as director of sales in the financial-services division for Cisco, leading the client team for a top-four global financial firm, where he consistently exceeded aggressive "stretch-goal" revenue targets and expanded Cisco's footprint with $100M+ data center and services franchises. Earlier, for Siegeworks, he managed the Major Accounts team serving Fortune 500 customers, and led the sales and business-development transition teams in the company's merger with Fishnet Security. As vice president of consulting services for Network Presence, he directed the company's security practice, achieving significant improvements in consulting services profitability. Earlier, he held leadership roles in sales engineering, business development, technical marketing, and network engineering with Check Point Software Technologies.

"As customers increasingly depend on bandwidth-hungry applications to support their business and seek to reap the benefits of virtualization and cloud technologies across the enterprise, they are often constrained by security concerns, legacy wide-area network architectures and outdated private-network cost models," said Winebrenner. "vIPtela's innovation is driving transformation of the $50BN+ wide-area network and private MPLS markets. I am very excited to join the team as we work with customers to address these challenges and support the evolving needs of the business."

"vIPtela was conceived by visionaries who believe that the WAN space is the networking industry's most fertile opportunity for innovation," said vIPtela CEO Amir Khan. "In the last ten years, the industry has seen incremental improvements in WAN and data center technology, but the Fortune 500 enterprises we serve are looking for quantum improvements in network performance, and in the ability to speed the rollout of new applications and services in a secure environment. We're honored to have executives of the caliber of Pepe and James to help us drive our vision forward as we prepare to enter the market."

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
