HP Brings Server Management to Mobile Devices

The latest release by HP takes server management to a whole new level

For years, HP has been on the cutting edge when it comes to server management technology. HP’s OpenView was long a standard in even heterogeneous server environments, and they’ve only continue to offer stellar options since then.

The latest release by HP takes server management to a whole new level, and will be a boon to system administrators everywhere. The company is releasing a smartphone and tablet application that will run on iOS and Android, allowing admins to control, configure, and monitor servers from just about anywhere.

This kind of flexibility is just the thing that many server administrators are looking for. The idea that they can use an app to log in to various server management subsystems means not only quicker response time, but it also means fewer trips into work for admins. Mobile devices also offer connectivity at times and places where WiFi isn’t available, meaning that response can be almost instant.

Gen8 Server Compatibility
The new app is designed to be used with the HP Gen8 servers, which were also announced at the same time as the management app. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the key aspects to the Gen8 servers:

  • They feature a much more integrated approach between hardware and software than ever before.
  • One goal of the Gen8 line is to reduce electricity costs for the data center by increasing performance per watt.
  • These servers constantly monitor and diagnose a total of 1,600 system parameters. The HP server app can access this data in order to determine what’s going on in terms of server health.
  • That monitoring data is gathered by a separate processor, and managed by something called the Integrated Lights Out engine.

Separate app for scripts
In addition, HP is releasing a separate mobile app that will allow systems admins to run scripts to configure applications on the servers. This means, as an example, using a script to configure a series of database servers, all from the app.

It isn’t certain yet when the new apps will be available for download, but it’s sure to be a huge boon to those system administrators who want real-time, instant access to server data.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The explosion of new web/cloud/IoT-based applications and the data they generate are transforming our world right before our eyes. In this rush to adopt these new technologies, organizations are often ignoring fundamental questions concerning who owns the data and failing to ask for permission to conduct invasive surveillance of their customers. Organizations that are not transparent about how their systems gather data telemetry without offering shared data ownership risk product rejection, regu...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
Machine learning has taken residence at our cities' cores and now we can finally have "smart cities." Cities are a collection of buildings made to provide the structure and safety necessary for people to function, create and survive. Buildings are a pool of ever-changing performance data from large automated systems such as heating and cooling to the people that live and work within them. Through machine learning, buildings can optimize performance, reduce costs, and improve occupant comfort by ...

Poor data quality and analytics drive down business value. In fact, Gartner estimated that the average financial impact of poor data quality on organizations is $9.7 million per year. But bad data is much more than a cost center. By eroding trust in information, analytics and the business decisions based on these, it is a serious impediment to digital transformation.
