SMC Networks Managed Switches Selected for Use in IBM's CloudBurst Solution Demonstration at VMworld 2009

SMC TigerSwitch 10/100/1000 Managed Layer 2 Switches (SMC8126L2) to Support the High-Bandwidth, High-Availability Requirements of the IBM CloudBurst Infrastructure

IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- SMC Networks(R), a leading provider of advanced, high performance networking solutions for the SMB and enterprise markets, today announced that the SMC TigerSwitch(TM) 10/100/1000 Managed Layer 2 Switches (SMC8126L2) have been selected for use in IBM's CloudBurst(TM) demonstration at VMworld 2009 from Aug. 31 through Sept. 3, 2009, at The Moscone Center in San Francisco.

The TigerSwitch SMC8126L2, which is part of SMC's latest single family Managed Gigabit solution that features PoE and clustering, and is rated as one of Instat's power efficient switch families, is a high-performance managed layer 2 switch featuring 26 Gigabit Ethernet ports and 4 SFP combo ports for fiber connectivity. This new TigerSwitch will be incorporated into a demonstration that will showcase the capabilities of the IBM CloudBurst 1.1 solution, a complete IBM Service Management package that includes IBM BladeCenter(R), IBM System Storage, Tivoli(R) software, VMware(R) virtualization and services to create a secure, reliable, private cloud computing infrastructure.

"SMC and IBM have been partners for many years and we are truly excited that IBM has chosen to use the SMC8126L2 managed switch for the demonstration of the impressive capabilities of CloudBurst at VMworld," explained Keith Alexis, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for SMC Networks. "With the eyes of the world on IBM and this exciting new cloud computing platform, they obviously need an infrastructure that will deliver performance, reliability and ease-of-use to enable CloudBurst to perform at its maximum capability. As with any collaborative effort, the strength of the system is only as strong as its weakest component. We're confident that the proven SMC8126L2 platform will do its part in enabling CloudBurst to impress the world. These partnerships continue to demonstrate the success of SMC's 'back to our roots' channel approach."

About the SMC TigerSwitch 10/100/1000 Managed Layer 2 Switch (SMC8126L2)

The SMC TigerSwitch 10/100/1000 Managed Layer 2 Switch (SMC8126L2) is a feature-rich high-performance Gigabit Ethernet switch specifically designed to handle high-bandwidth applications in top-of-rack data centers, high performance edge applications or application conscious workgroup environments. Built to be one of the world's "greenest" switch platforms, this eco-friendly SMC8126L2, which features 26 10/100/1000BASE-T ports and 4 SFP transceiver ports, delivers high performance with a power requirement of only 1.4 watts per port.

The TigerSwitch 10/100/1000 was built as an innovative product family based on a high performance single chip design to ensure maximum data transmission with low latency. The versatile SMC8126L2 supports MultiLink Trunking with LAPC enabling the user to bundle the front panel ports to provide higher-speed uplinks. In addition, the easy-to-manage switches support IP clustering which allows users to group together up to 32 switches as part of a logical cluster. Security features including IEEE 802.1x, private VLANs, L2/L3/L4 access control lists, HTTPS and SSL, and TACACS+ client authentication prevent unauthorized access to sensitive or valuable network resources.

Other features of the SMC8126L2 include: Quality of Service, per port bandwidth management, port mirroring, Spanning Tree Protocol, Forwarding Mode, Jumbo Frame support (on the Gigabit ports), and static port security. The switches can be managed via Telnet, SLIP, Web-based HTTP, and SNMP, or via an RS-232 DB-9 console port.

The SMC TigerSwitch 10/100/1000 Managed Layer 2 Switch (SMC8126L2) is backed by a three-year warranty and 24/7 technical support, and is available worldwide via authorized SMC distributors and value-added resellers.

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
